How the WhatsApp link works

The business invites you through the WhatsApp chat you already share. Since WhatsApp already knows that number is yours, the link inherits that trust: we don’t need to verify your phone.

  1. You message the business on WhatsApp

    “Hi, I need help with my order.”

  2. It replies with a link

    “Let’s continue on SecureChat: https://securechat-app.com/i/…”. It can be used only once and it expires.

  3. You tap the link

    If you have the app, the conversation opens. If not, the page takes you to the store and shows you a code, for example K7M2QX4P.

  4. You carry on the conversation

    You go straight into the chat with the business, end-to-end encrypted and with no expiry date.

That’s why only the business can start a conversation. The link is the credential: without an already authenticated channel to inherit trust from, there is no conversation. There are no chats between individuals either.

Security, explained without the fine print

We don’t read your messages

They are encrypted on your phone with a key that only your device and the business’s server have. We store and deliver encrypted text.

We do see metadata

Which businesses you talk to, when, and the approximate size of your messages. We explain it in the privacy policy.

Encryption ends at the business

What the business does with a message once it is decrypted on its systems is its responsibility. The limits of the model are covered in Security.
